Home, a poem and picture book

Home is a poem in the form of a picture book which draws on the experience of a girl displaced from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to Armenia in 2023.
It reflects the internal struggle many displaced children face, navigating a sudden shift from familiarity to newness, from silence to noise, from being alone to being surrounded, yet not fully belonging. It shows a quiet search for home, one that lives in memory, language, and connection.
“You can belong here…and still belong there.”
The poem highlights the role of educators and other caring adults in helping children feel seen, heard, and valued in unfamiliar places. The author invites readers to reflect on what it means to ‘belong,’ and how we can, together, create spaces where children begin to rebuild a sense of home.
